4 Ways To Keep Your Dumpster Clean

Environmental Blog

If you own a business and rent a dumpster that you keep on-site and that the garbage company comes by and empties every week, it is important for you to take steps to keep your dumpster clean.

You wouldn't want to put a dirty trash can right outside your business, and a dumpster is essentially a large, dirty trash can. Failing to clean your dumpster can result in unpleasant odors and the attraction of pests to your dumpster.

Way #1: Wash with Bleach & Water

First, after your dumpster has been emptied and there is nothing inside of it, wash it with a mixture of bleach and water. The bleach should help sanitize and kill any bacteria and odors in your dumpster.

Put the plug into the bottom of your dumpster, and fill it with about half a foot of water. Then, add some bleach and allow the mixture to sit for about an hour. This will help break up debris on the bottom of your dumpster, where junk tends to accumulate. Then, take the plug out and allow the mixtures to release.

Way #2: Allow Your Dumpster to Dry

Second, before you start putting trash in your dumpster, give it at least twenty-four hours for the dumpster to dry off. If you start putting stuff in the dumpster again right away, it is just going to stick to the insides of the dumpster, creating a dirty environment once again.

Way #3: Clean Around the Exterior

You need to make sure you wash the outside of your dumpster as well. Dirt can easily accumulate on the outside of your dumpster as you throw the trash into the dumpster. You can wash off the outside of your dumpster on a more regular basis, as you don't have to wait for the outside to dry in order to continue to use your dumpster.

Don't just clean your dumpster itself; clean around the dumpster. Spray off the cement around your dumpster in order to keep it clean of any debris that may fall off the trash your business puts in the dumpster.

Way #4: Schedule Regular Pick-Ups

Finally, don't wait for your dumpster to be full to schedule to have it emptied. Get your dumpster emptied on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. Don't allow trash to fester outside of your store for weeks or months; have your trash service come by and collect the trash in the dumpster on a regular basis.

Keeping the dumpster your business rents and keeps outside of your store clean will help the area around your dumpster smell good and will discourage pests from getting into your dumpster.

Protecting Precious Resources

About a year ago, it occurred to me that there were some serious gaps in my focus on protecting the environment. We were always running the hose when we shouldn't be, disposing of the wrong items in our community trash can, and littering. I knew that I wanted to make things better, so we began thinking about different ways to protect our Earth's precious resources. I began focusing on keeping our yard cleaner and working with the city to take advantage of green living initiatives, and it saved me a lot of money. Check out this website for great tips on protecting resources.
